Book of the Month: Verity by Colleen Hoover

“What you read will taste so bad at times, you’ll want to spit it out, but you’ll swallow these words, and they will become part of you, part of your gut, and you will hurt because of them.’

I thought long and hard about what I wanted this month’s book pick to be, and I have to say it was not easy. Not in the sense that I read so many amazing books that I just couldn’t choose, rather, I read so many amazing Colleen Hoover books that I just couldn’t choose. Let me elaborate. I felt bad about this month’s book favorite being another CoHo book, but then I remembered that this is my blog and I make the rules. So, another Colleen Hoover book it is.

For starters, if you aren’t familiar with Colleen Hoover, where have you been? I don’t know if she has always been this popular, but I feel as if her name and work has skyrocketed recently on BookTok – the side of TikTok dedicated to authors and readers alike. According to Relevant Magazine, the esteemed author has sold 7.3 million print copies in 2022 – that’s more than the 5 million sales of the bible. Additionally, Hoover holds five of the top 15 spots on the New York Times bestselling list. Suffice it to say, her work is phenomenal.

When I first heard of Verity, I was told that it was part of the thriller/romance genre. Now, I’m more of a romcom genre gal myself, however, if Colleen Hoover is the author, I’m willing to go out of my comfort zone and read it. The standalone novel was published in 2018 and had a never before released chapter come out in 2022.

About the Book

Our main character, Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling author whose mom just died. Her talent as a novelist is strong, however, her less than charming demeanor and marketing of her work makes her less loved than other authors. When her life is turning upside down – eviction notice, no money, and the recent passing of her mother, she receives an opportunity that’s far too good to pass up.

Verity Crawford is an extremely popular author, however, a bad car accident leaves her severely injured and unable to finish her highly anticipated book series. This isn’t the first tragedy to plague the Crawford family either. In the previous months, they lost their twin girls in separate tragic accidents.

You could say fate brings Verity and Lowen together, but really, its Verity’s husband, Jeremy. Jeremy read one of Lowen’s books and thought she would be the perfect author to finish Verity’s series. Upon acceptance of the offer to finish the series, Lowen visits and stays with the Crawford family, which includes Jeremy, Verity, and their one remaining child, in order to go through Verity’s extensive notes and research. During her stay, Lowen comes across Verity’s autobiography, and in an effort to learn more about her, decides to read it. Reading her unpublished autobiography is just the tip of the iceberg, as strange things begin happening in the Crawford home, in addition to a blossoming romance between Lowen and Jeremy. Lowen becomes haunted by the work that she’s reading as she learns more about Verity Crawford and discovers a secret that turns their world upside down.

Rating

I would give Verity five out of five stars. This book sent chills down my spine. Another Colleen Hoover masterpiece, Verity will have you turning pages to find out what happens next in mere hours.

March Favorites 2024

Without further ado, I bring you my top items in the following categories for the month of March: books, makeup, skincare, food/drinks, miscellaneous, and shower things. Let's get to it, shall we? Book: The Coworker by Freida McFadden Oddly enough, one of my sixth-grade students recommended this book to me. Suffice to say, she's well-read for her age. This book had me hooked from chapter one. I'm not normally one for thrillers or suspense in stories, in fact, I typically enjoy books on the opposite end of the spectrum. My cup of tea would be of the YA and romance genre, mainly because I'm a big wimp; however, this book may have converted me.  Dawn Schiff is the reliable employee. She shows up to work on time every day and takes her breaks at regularly scheduled times. Like clockwork, her coworkers know where she is at any given moment. Natalie Farrell is Dawn's coworker and desk mate. Natalie is described as the beautiful and popular employee in the office. She is e...

The Wellness Check: An In-Depth Update on My Weight Loss Journey

First post back in over a year... No pressure. I figured I'd jump right back in with The Wellness Check , my personal check-in on my own health and wellness journey. Where do I even begin?  In January of this year I decided to make some big changes. Quit smoking, start exercising, and start eating less. That all went great until I got sick. All things good went out the window. No gym, a packet of smokes, and of course all the takeout because who wants to cook when they’re sick? But the smoking I’ve found to be the most upsetting. Unforgivable, I might even say. I write this post from my car as in a matter of urgency. I’m currently waiting to head into my 2:00 PM doctor’s appointment to, fingers crossed, get help with losing weight. I’ve been pretty open about my struggles with my weight here and on social media so I have no qualms with sharing this part of my journey. I also find no shame in accepting the fact that I need help in the form of medication.  I’ve been prescribed w...

Gearing Up for Thanksgiving

Ahhh Thanksgiving. One of my favorite holidays of the year, right there next to Christmas. When my husband celebrated his first Thanksgiving with me eight years ago, he lovingly said to me, “It’s like a trial run for Christmas.” I laugh at that every year. I never thought of it that way, but he has a point. I don’t know about you, but over the years, I’ve made sure to perfect my Christmas recipes over Thanksgiving. My husband and I have also used this time to get our systems in place. What systems? I’m so glad you asked. Let’s talk about our holiday set-up system. What is a holiday set-up system? It really is simple. A holiday set-up system is where you ensure you have everything in place when it comes time to sit down with your family and friends. This means you have your table set, your meal is cooking away, you may have prepared some food ahead of time, your home is clean and tidy, and you’re cleaning the kitchen as you go. Let’s go over our typical Thanksgiving set-up.  Step 1:...
